Conscious Sedation

A relaxed and anxiety-free dental experience.

What is conscious sedation in a dental clinic?

Conscious sedation is a procedure that involves administering a series of sedative drugs to a patient, with the aim of helping them relax and avoid the anxiety produced by dental treatment.

Nitrous oxide, at a concentration of 50% in the inspired fraction, has an analgesic effect with a decrease in the perception threshold of different painful stimuli.

At this concentration, nitrous oxide does not have an anesthetic effect. It produces a state of conscious sedation: the patient is relaxed, calm, and maintains an indifferent attitude towards their surroundings.

Both the absorption and the elimination of nitrous oxide through the pulmonary route are very rapid due to its low solubility in blood and tissues. This property explains the rapidity of its analgesic effect and the restoration of the initial state after the cessation of inhalation.

Its elimination occurs unchanged through the pulmonary route.

At ENIQ, we also administer an analgesic with sedation so that the postoperative period is more pleasant. With advanced technology AirLiquide.

However, it should be noted that conscious sedation is not used to alleviate pain. Therefore, when a treatment is performed under sedation, anesthetic medication must also be used, which is what prevents pain and discomfort typical of the intervention.

Specialist's opinion

Conscious sedation at the dentist, our opinion:

Sedation can be applied in any dental treatment, whatever it may be. For example: fillings, root canals, periodontal treatments, oral surgeries, etc.

However, it is most commonly used in major procedures such as implants or bone regeneration.

This is simply because treatments that are longer or more complex are those that generate more nerves or discomfort among patients.

There are many cases of patients who come to the dental clinic with significant anxiety and real fear of dental treatments, or those who have had bad experiences, have felt pain when they went to the dentist and it is beyond their strength to open their mouth in a dental chair regardless of the treatment they need. These patients need to undergo procedures under sedation.
